The Controller And The Needer

Scenario: Interview during a bathroom break in the car/toilet/carpark [insert country].

Dawn sits alone in the car with Jonti.

Jonti:

Now that we’ve got some spare time alone… how do you think it's going so far?

Dawn:

(enthused) Yeah, great. You know. I knew it would take time. Still her money comes in handy. But hey, that’s what you get when you’re old mum poops her clogs.

Jonti:

(refrained snigger) I think it’s maybe ‘pops’ not poops.

Dawn:

What?

Jonti:

Never mind. So how are you coping with Ian? It’s been a while that you’ve been on the road together.

Dawn:

Oh, great! Yeah, it’s… great.

Long beat of silence, Dawn staring into space.

CUT TO:

Ian, back to us, at a urinal.

Jonti:

So how are you enjoying travelling with your sist —

Ian:

— Half sister…

Jonti:

—Yes, half-sister, thus far?

Ian:

It’s great! Really… great…

Another long beat of silence.

CUT TO:

Dawn, still staring into space.

CUT TO:

Ian still at the urinal.

Ian:

She is a bit… (hesitates)

Jonti:

Go on, Ian.

Ian:

Well… controlling.

CUT TO:

Dawn:

Needy. He is SO needy. Lord.

CUT TO:

Ian washing hands.

Ian:

She has to be in control of everything.

Jonti:

How so?

CUT TO:

Dawn:

Well… you know, well you can tell just by how much to you’ve spent with us. I think to myself, maybe I should just leave him, this is on the days when he’s not so good, and I think — maybe I SHOULD. Just, leave him girl! At the side of the road.

Dawn nods to herself.

CUT TO:

Jonti:

Does it bother you?

Ian:

Um… don’t care really. She needs to feel in control, so why not let her…

CUT TO:

Dawn:

I mean I have to do everything for him, tell him exactly what to do. Otherwise, y’know, his entire world would shatter!

CUT TO:

Ian drying hands - paper towels. He ponders.

Ian: (slightly nervous) Plus, she she’s strong.

CUT TO:

Jonti:

Could you ever leave him then?

Dawn:

God no! What would I do without him?

Awkward pause. Dawn searches the car with her eyes nervously.

Jonti:

Don’t you mean, ‘what would he do without you?’

Dawn:

(single breath) yeah that’s exactly what I said, you’ve got it on tape.

Jonti:

Riiight…

Dawn turns away, pretending to sleep. A glimmer of the real Dawn perhaps?

Beat.

CUT TO:

Ian comes out into the carpark. The car can be clearly seen from a distance. Ian looks around frantically.

Ian: Where’s the car?

FADE OUT
