FINDING HER IS EASY

SYNOPSIS
Ian and Dawn have help tracking down their sister in Germany.

LOCATION
Hotel room in Munich.

DAWN is alone in the room. IAN has vanished, possibly with a girl. No-one can quite remember.

DAWN
He needs his space. It’s like he has to grow wings and spread them. Cut loose and just be free to explore Munich, where nobody knows who, what or where he is. Pure freedom in the land of the free. I envy him that. And he knows we’re connected internally deep down. We stuck together in the sperm cup and we’ll stick together now. He doesn’t need to contact me. And he won’t. He’ll just turn up later. That’s the next we’ll hear from Ian.

DAWN’s mobile rings.

DAWN
Hello? Ian! Where are you? I’ve been worried sick! Are you OK? Yes. Yes. What’s the address? OK I’ll be there as soon as I can. Well done. Good, Ian. You’ve done good there.

DAWN hangs up.

DAWN
Ian’s only found Sophie.

FADE OUT

FADE IN

A house in a German suburb. Dawn pulls up.

JONTI
How are you feeling, Dawn? Meeting a sister for the first time?

DAWN
It’s exactly as I knew it would be. That’s what’s so shocking. I knew she’d live in a place like this. It’s cosy, but it’s aspirational. Rich but not ostentatious. If I was German, this would be my perfect life. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’d get rid of those bushes, mind. And that front door would have to go. Naff.

DAWN gets out and goes towards the house and knocks. The door is opened by Annabel, the German girl Ian went off with the night before. DAWN immediately hugs her.

ANNABEL
Erm…

DAWN
Shush. Don’t speak, Sophie. Remember this moment. Meeting the big sister you always wanted. Let me look at you. We’re so alike. And you’re German. Easily my favourite European country.

DAWN hugs ANNABEL again. IAN appears, eating some yogurt.

IAN
Hello Dawn. I see you’ve met Annabel. I stayed at hers last night. Well I was in her garage. Sorry. They have central heating in their garages here. And a rabbit.

DAWN
Annabel?

ANNABEL
I wanted to say but you…

DAWN
Where’s Sophie? Is this a trick? If you’ve hurt her…

ANNABEL
My father can find her. He is a, you know. A Kriminalpolizeigesamtbereichtetfindetverlorenoffizier.

DAWN
Yeah. Good.

ANNABEL
Like you have in England?

DAWN
Yes. Lots.

ANNABEL
Come in.

Inside, ANNABEL’s father, HERR FASSBINDER is at a computer.

HERR FASSBINDER
Hello. You are Dawn. It’s nice to meet you. I am happy to help you find this Sophie Huber. Please sit here.

HERR FASSBINDER sees JONTI.
Ah, you have a camera.

JONTI
It’s a Sony HVR-A1U with modded…

HERR FASSBINDER
I must ask you not to film the screen. As you know I am a Kriminalpolizeigesamtbereichtetfindetverlorenoffizier and in Germany it’s not allowed to film the work of the Kriminalpolizeigesamtbereichtetfindetverlorenoffizier in detail. You can film behind the screen and see our faces. Maybe make a better movie!

JONTI grunts.

HERR FASSBINDER (tapping at computer, flanked by DAWN and IAN)
Finding her is easy. Everyone in Germany has an ID card. You do not need to carry it of course. That is draconian. But the polizei can arrest you if you don’t. Ah. Sophie Huber. Here.

DAWN
That’s her. That’s our sister, Ian!

IAN
What’s she wearing?

HERR FASSBINDER
A towel. She’s just had a bath in her flat.

IAN
Is this live?

HERR FASSBINDER
No. This was filmed… an hour and a quarter ago. Ah. New screen. Here she is, shopping. Buying, you can see, grapes and razors. That was twenty minutes ago on the Verruecktendamm. And now she’s drinking coffee at Café Blumenweise. This is live. Here. Another view. I can zoom in… here.

DAWN
She needs the razors.

IAN
She’s eating cheese.

IAN looks at his watch.

DAWN
This is amazing. It’s like looking at another person’s life but they don’t know. It’s like being dead. An angel looking down. Seeing in black and white. Protecting. You’re such a caring society.

HERR FASSBINDER
Thank you. We have you English to thank for this. You invented the Kriminalpolizeigesamtbereichtetfindetverlorenoffizier role, as you know.

DAWN
Yes, but you’ve made it your own, in a way.

HERR FASSBINDER
No I don’t wish to be rude but Sophie Huber is at the café. If you go now you could be with her, in eighteen minutes.

DAWN
Thank you, Professor… And thank you Annabel. Come on Ian, let’s go! Schnell!

They all go outside. DAWN pauses. She opens her purse and impulsively offers some Euro notes to HERR FASSBINDER.

HERR FASSBINDER is embarrassed.

DAWN
Oh. Oh sorry. I thought… There.

DAWN adds some more notes to the pile.

HERR FASSBINDER hesitates before trousering it.

ANNABEL
Good luck. Hope your sister is nice! Good luck Ian!

DAWN and IAN drive away.

IAN
What a place.

DAWN
Mmm. I could live here.
